The Spruce Goose

Hey friends! I hope Monday was good to you. Mine was super busy, and way too long! Here's hoping the rest of the week is a bit more relaxed. But wait, what's that word?! ;) Anyway, I'm excited you stopped by today. I have a fun post for you. Though not actually in Washington, I'm sharing Lovely's visit to see the Spruce Goose within my Seattle series.

While staying in Seattle for work, he ventured a few hours to Oregon to Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum to see Howard Hughes' famed Spruce Goose! If you've seen the Leonardo DiCaprio film, The Aviator, you're familiar with the Spruce Goose and Howard Hughes' quirks. Hughes went out on a whim to build an all wood aircraft to assist in the efforts of World War II. The aircraft only ever got off the ground once and wasn't complete in time to use for the war, but it was highly significant because of its size. According to Wikipedia, "It is the largest flying boat (as it could land on water), and has the largest wingspan of any aircraft in history." It's so large, he couldn't even fit it all in one photo (must teach him to take a panoramic photo). ;) And though I didn't see it in person, boy can you tell it is huge from the photos! It's really quite amazing that the thing ever even made it off of the ground! Definitely a sight to see! If you're the touristy type, you can also have your photo made in the flight deck of the plane, where Howard Hughes himself once manned the aircraft. This year also marks the 70th anniversary of its first flight.

Along with the Spruce Goose, the museum boasts designs from Orville & Wilbur Wright, modern day aircraft, and everything in between! If you have an extended stay in Seattle or Portland and are into aircraft, you should check out the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. It was so good, Lovely made the 3 hour venture from Seattle twice!
